Girdwood Gerrish Library

About Us

The 9,000 square-foot library looks like a cozy ski chalet and is nestled at the base of stunning mountains and the local ski resort. The building also houses the Girdwood Community Room and is connected to the Girdwood Fire Department.

Our vision is an educated and connected community where our Library is an essential center for learning, inspiration, and community pride for people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. At the library, you’ll find ways to read, watch, listen, learn, and meet including programs for youth, families, and adults; plus a variety of books, DVDs, and electronic resource databases. We also have computers available and cozy nooks to hang out with a good book. Free WiFi.

Community Room

The Girdwood Community Room is available to rent for meetings or events. Reservations are handled through Girdwood Parks and Recreation. Call (907) 343-8373 or send an email to tylerms@muni.org.

History

The Municipality opened the Scott and Wesley Gerrish Library in May 2008. The Scott and Wesley Gerrish Branch Library was named in memory of brothers Scott and Wesley Gerrish who grew up in Girdwood. Their untimely deaths as a result of being hit by a car on the Alyeska Highway in 1981. This tragic accident occurred the week that the Girdwood Library was scheduled to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Through community action, a name change was approved for the new library to honor the lives of the young boys.
